Haywire Twist

The connection for single-strand wire leader — the only reliable way to secure a hook to hard wire.

wireIntermediateStrength 4/5wire

How to tie it

  1. 1Pass the wire through the hook eye and cross it back over the standing wire.
  2. 2Twist both wires around each other evenly 4–5 times (a true X-twist, not one wrapping the other).
  3. 3Then make 4–5 tight barrel wraps with the tag around the standing wire.
  4. 4Bend the tag into a small handle and rock it back and forth until it snaps clean (don't cut — leaves a burr).

Common mistakes

  • One wire wrapping the other instead of a symmetric twist (weak)
  • Cutting the tag instead of breaking it clean

When not to use it

Cable/multi-strand wire — use crimps instead.
