Surf Rod

A long, powerful rod built to launch bait and lures past the breakers from the beach. Usually 9–12 feet with a long handle for two-handed casting.

When to use it

  • Beach fishing
  • Casting heavy bait rigs and sinkers
  • Reaching the trough/sandbar

Strengths

  • Huge casting distance
  • Keeps line above the waves
  • Backbone for big surf fish

  • Heavy and unwieldy up close
  • Overkill for calm inshore water

  • Under-powering it so you can't cast a pyramid sinker
  • Not rinsing sand/salt after every trip
