Circle Hook
A hook with the point curled back toward the shank. It slides to the corner of the mouth and sets itself when you reel — you don't swing. Best for live/cut bait and conservation.
When to use it
- Live and cut bait
- Bottom fishing
- Catch-and-release (rarely gut-hooks)
- Required for many reef fisheries
Strengths
- High corner-of-jaw hookup rate
- Reduces gut-hooking — great for release
- Often legally required for reef fish
Weaknesses
- Won't work if you set hard (you pull it out)
- Not for artificial lures
Key facts
Recommended sizes: 1/0–5/0 inshore; 6/0–10/0 for big bottom fish/sharks
Best species: Snapper, grouper, redfish, tarpon, sharks
Common mistakes
- Swinging to set instead of reeling tight — the #1 circle-hook mistake
